Hello everyone, my name is Amy and I live here in sunny California. Besides being married to the military, I have one teenage son, two cats, a sweet parakeet, and of course my mixed breed black/choc. Labrador dog "Spike" Being military, I've gotten pretty used to moving, starting over, and the uncertainty and changes that the military life throws at us. This is our third move in four years! But nothing has prepared us for the nightmare we've gone through in the last week. Spike is our 8 1/2 year old lab, he underwent emergency surgery a year ago, to remove a kidney stone that had gone unnoticed by two vets, which caused a horrible infection in both kidneys. It was then, that tour vet did a DNA test, as the stone Spike had is only common to dalmatians. The DNA results revealed that spike is indeed a black/choc lab, but also has dalmatian, beagle, and cocker spaniel as well!1 Shocking!! But that explained the kidney stones, and because of the breeds he's made of, has been on an special urinary health diet. We had thought things for him would settle down and he could spend the rest of his life being happy and sweet, but that hope was shattered a little over a week ago, when he started having trouble with his left eye. An emergency vet visit quickly revealed that he has primary glaucoma. My family's world suddenly shattered. The breakdown I had right there in the vet office was the first of many, my son has taken it the hardest. With it being primary glaucoma, his right eye is at risk, and total blindness is in his near future. My heart is just broken. It was then that I realized we really had no support group, no friends with dogs as pets. And carrying this sadness, and this battle on our own just wasnt healthy. A friend mentioned as I was setting up an online fundraiser, that I should check out Yuku, and so here I am.
